Fauna Rehabilitation
CINTRA took part in several rehabilitation cases of oil damaged fauna, below there is a detail of our plan of action.

EMERGENCY ACTIONS BEFORE OIL DAMAGED FAUNA

CAPTURE AND CONTENTION
The contaminated animals are captured in their environment, using techniques and adequate equipments, minimizing their stress and avoiding physical damage (contusions, between others)
CONCENTRATION
The captured animals are concentrated in an annexed area to the oil cleaning containers, protecting them from the outdoors (depending on the specie) in cages or boxes. Most importantly, is to maintain the animals protected, as oil takes away their isolating feather and hair coverage, leaving them with risk of death from hypothermia.
STABILIZATION
The captured animals suffer a veterinarian inspection, receiving fluid therapy (hydration) and oral administration of vitamins and activated carbon, whose function is to absorb all the oil eventually ingested by the animal; it is impossible for the digestive tract to absorb that ingested oil, and so be eliminated by stool.
CLEANING
After the animal's stabilization (which may occur a day after from the capture of the animal), can finally proceed with the cleaning itself. This consists of successive washes with clean water, detergent, to remove all the oily residue from wings and feathers.
WASHING / RINSING
When the cleaning water that passes through the animal has no contamination signals, all the surface must be carefully washed / rinsed, so as to avoid the natural oiliness of the skin to be damaged by the detergent, preventing the thermal isolation that this oiliness provides, exposing the individual to hypothermia.
DRYING
The animals must be dried by means of hot air. In bird's case, the maximum reorganization of the feathers is attempted, so as to improve the natural thermal protection.
FEEDING / ALIMENTATION AND EVALUATION
The animals are again restrained, sheltered from the outdoor and fed. They are left under observation, so as to evaluate their recovery. Assuring a certain release and survival.
LIBERATION / RELEASE
The rehabilitated and fit for liberation animals are taken to adequate areas, previously chosen for such occasion. This guarantees that the released individuals don't suffer again.
